Why We’re Unhealthy, Part 2
Hello everyone.
This is part 2 of “Why We’re Unhealthy”
(If you missed Part 1, here is the link, Why We’re Unhealthy, Part 1 – Ironbywood)
I must add one more thought or reason in my mind of “Why We’re Unhealthy”, before going to my contributors.
Some of us think we know it all or know enough, as well as take are health for granted until it’s too late. Sometimes it’s not to late, but we have some rough patches in life because of our health that could have been preventable.
We can never become complacent with our health, nor stop learning. We must always be proactive rather than reactive.
Here’s what some of the contributors had to say-
Lisa Howard
“I think “why aren’t we healthy? “Is a great question to ask! I think pretty much everybody agrees that a strong foundation has four parts: eating well, exercising regularly, sleeping well, and managing stress. I think the one that causes the most confusion – and why it’s my favorite – is the “eating well” part. Most people do not pay attention to what they eat. My advice is to skip reading the front of the package and read the list of ingredients on the back. While you can still overlook things that way, at least that puts you in a better position to know what you’re actually eating because then you’re looking past the marketing hoopla on the front of the package, which often has no third-party certification or requirements behind it. So, my answer actually is four things, but I really emphasize the eating part of the foundation. And within that, the three categories I advise people to avoid are refined oils, refined sugars, and refined grains and starches.”
Stated by Lisa Howard-
Author of The Big Book of Healthy Cooking Oils from Page Street Publishing (I loved this book. Bought it for a few people. It’s interesting to know, that most of the oils sold in the store, that are used in restaurants and in food products that we buy. Are not the best for our consumption. No, it’s not something that will kill us. It’s just that for businesses its more profitable to get the cheaper alternatives and most consumers, like myself, don’t know any better. Until I read this book. The book will help you choose the best cooking oils for yourself and all occasions)

Three reasons why people are unhealthy:
1. Delegating their health and vitality to other professionals rather than taking an active role in managing their health.
2. Lack of pursuing an integrated and comprehensive application of God’s natural laws of health based on their individual requirements and capacities, i.e., proper nutrition, daily exercise, proper rest, sufficient water, lots of fresh air, sunlight, moderation and balance in in all things, emotional, mental and spiritual support including trust and living in harmony with all of God’s natural and moral laws of health and vitality.
3. The overwhelming emphasis on the medical infrastructure in the delivery of health information and support which tends to be more politically and economically driven as opposed to true science and in the best interest of the health and vitality of the general public.

1 – Stress is the worst toxin in my view. If we are in a state of chronic stress it oxidizes even the most healthful lifestyle practices.
2 – Absence of purpose, meaning, worthiness, faith and joy also take a hit on one’s health. There seems to be an associated disconnect to self-care with these mental, emotional and spiritual issues.
3 – Poor diet and lifestyle practices. When we aren’t well nourished, properly rested, moving enough, breathing clean air, well hydrated with clean water, connecting socially as well as in nature, and minding our mind, our thoughts, our words, our actions… health can deteriorate.
Living in a state of great health is a full orchestration of all the aspects of ourselves. It’s a beautiful synchronicity that requires a full-time conductor. 😊 Words from a long-time ‘whole-self lifestyle wellness coach. Blessings to you for your optimal well-being.

Heath comes in many layers. As Sherwood gave his great definitions of health by way of Emotional health, Spiritual health (A persons belief system), Internal health, and External health.
What does unhealthy mean for us? There are many layers of health and unhealthy. We may be healthy in a few areas and not healthy in others.
I think overall the reasons we are unhealthy stems from our perceptions of health. What do we perceive as healthy within ourselves and outside of our selves.
How do we come to know what our current state of health is? Sometimes we don’t know poor health until a disease or issue manifests… while under the surface it was building over time due to our ignorance.
I think the #1 reason we are unhealthy in some areas and healthy in others is due to our level of harmony and knowledge of natural laws.
According to Ayurveda, a system of health that acknowledges natural laws; all disease (all that is unhealthy within us) stems from misuse, overuse, and underuse of time, senses, and actions.
Thus, the connection of what we perceive in our mind down to our heart and spirit and to every cell and structure within our being.
There is a saying that goes, “you are what you eat”. Another clear reason why we are unhealthy. If we eat junk food our body becomes junky… overweight, sluggish, tired.
What we put in our body is what forms and feeds our very tissues. If we are eating processed foods and meats with lots of hormones our system gets all out of order. It has to fight to try and regain balance and detox. Which puts us in a state of stress. Stress from our mind to our body sends us in a vicious cycle.
Thus, as Sherwood mentioned in his top 3, stress is a key player. Stress that has accumulated from our mind to our physiology. Ultimately from a lack of perception to knowing ourselves, listening to our body and how it is responding to our actions.
When we have stress built up, it becomes harder to listen and to know what the right action is. And even when we do know we have become too weak in our mind and senses to take right actions.
One of the #1 ways I think we can reset and restore our operating system is through meditation, non-action. Allow our bodies to go within, to be, to listen. Then from that place we can come to better health. Layer by layer we can find what we need within for right actions without.
Our bodies are amazing, we are created from all the same elements which is contained in earth. Like the animals that are in tune with nature they know what is good for them. Thus, we also have the ability to connect back to nature and observe and relearn that which is best for our own health.
In rhythm with rising with the sun, life energy, and sleeping when it goes down. That simple habit in alignment with nature has become more difficult in our fast-paced age. But that alone, will do wonders for one’s health.
I, like Sherwood, are working on being more consistent with rest so that I may know greater layers of health. It’s a balancing act but something I think is doable for everyone to find, and already exists within us.
To sum up my top 3 list which I think is all the same things just said in three different ways 🙂
- Lack of harmony with Nature. (Poor food sources, sleep, environment).
- Perceptions are out of balance. Overuse, misuse, and wrong use of time, senses, and action.
- Buildup of stressors due to factors above and not de-stressing or knowing how to remove stresses within our mind and our physiology.

I hope you have enjoyed the insights in “Why We’re Unhealthy” Parts 1 & 2.
Though in both writings you may find something you agree with or not.
The key is to find something, even if it’s all of it, that you can discuss with your healthcare/primary care provider with. To see if it’s something you should implement into your wellness journey.
We’re all works in progress. The key is, to do the work, daily. For there are certain things that are worth it. Our health is one of them. So that means you’re worth it.
